MGN ON THE ROAD
Mt. PleasantThe MGCOA Winter Conference is turning out to be the place to be if you are in the golf industry in Michigan. This year's edition, held at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt.Pleasant, drew over 200 people representing 63 golf courses and 25 companies. They were there to discuss the status of golf in Michigan or provide golf course owners with information on new golf course products. Kate Moore, Executive Director of MGCOA, credited the timely program, the location and the Sunday evening through Tuesday format, for being strong motivators to attend the conference. Next year, the conference will he held in Frankenmuth.
Kate Moore and her team treated attendees to a first rate program that featured our own Michigan golf experts; Steve Kircher of Boyne USA, Bill Roberts of Red Fox Run, George Zimmermann of Travel Michigan, John Dodge of ROI, Jim Olson of Olson and Bzdok and Dr. Kevin Love of CMU. (Note: You can view the headliners on the Michigan Golfer TV Show http://michigangolfer.tv this coming Friday)
They also had an impressive awards program, which featured recognition going to Kathy Aznavorian and Sandy Mily of Fox Hills for best new golf course of the year and businessman/journalist Terry Moore for his lifetime achievement in the area of golf. The Jan/Feb online issue of the Michigan Golfer will have a more detailed story and list of honorees. http://mgcoa.org .
While in town we stopped by to see Bill Knopp, now the Director of Sales and Marketing at the Mt. Pleasant Comfort Inn. Bill, as many of you may recall, was one of the original shakers and movers at Battle Creek, when they established themselves as a golf destination. He coordinated the lodging activity from the then Stouffers Inn. He indicated that Toby Hilton is doing a terrific job in Battle Creek at McCamly Plaza. Bill has taken the same enthusiasm and applied it to the Mt. Pleasant area.
Mt. Pleasant has a very aggressive golf package program, entitled, Golf Central. Carol Emmendorfer and her crew from the Mt. Pleasant CVB have done a great job in golf packaging. "We have a variety of courses for our guests. Our top courses include, Buck's Run, the Pohlcat, St. Ives and the new Tullymore. We also have other fine courses such as Riverwood, The Pines, Snow Snake and the Emerald. We can also direct our guests to a late evening nine holes for $5," said Knopp. "We have something for everybody." http://www.mountpleasantwow.com/getaway.htm
For those that will be attending the Mid Michigan Golf Show, also to be held at the Soaring Eagle, you might want to give Bill a call and book a room. (989) 772-4000 or 1-800-228-5150
Speaking of the Mid Michigan Show, which will be held at the Soaring Eagle February 15-17, E. J. Brown of H & S Productions, says that all is going well. "We are getting quite a bit of interest in the show and we are booking booths now," said Brown. He also indicated that he will continue the tradition established by Cheryl Nordin of CMU in putting on a great vendor's party the first night of the show. I'll drink and eat to that.
